5 Tips to Begin Healthy Living

5 Tips to Begin Healthy Living

Five Tips to Begin Healthy Living: By Justin Glenn
Working out is essential to living healthy. But as a rookie the workout scene can often be intimidating. Actually, overwhelming might be a better way to describe it. There are so many products, so many ideas, and so many myths that have been spread about training and fitness that even experienced individuals can become confused. Here are five tips that will help clear the air and assist you on your journey to shaping yourself!

Just Start

That’s right! Just do something!

As a novice, your workout program does not need to be the most intricate and advanced.  It has been shown that people who live a sedentary lifestyle get results with even the most inefficient workout regimens. So just get off your butt!  As you gain more experience you will figure out the activities you like and dislike.  At that point you can begin developing workout programs that work best for you. So take action now and adjust later!

Stay Basic

There are so many articles, ideas, products and supplements out there but in reality you just need to stay basic.  There is no “trick” to living a healthy lifestyle.  If someone tries to sell you on a “trick” don’t buy it! (Literally and figuratively)  Nothing will be more effective than hard work and dedication.  So avoid confusion, stay basic, and hit the gym hard!

Be Patient

You did not get this way in just a few weeks, or even in a few months.  So why would you believe that change will happen so quickly?   The sad fact is that there is no quick fix, but don't let that discourage you!

Have a goal of losing 1-2 lbs of body fat per week.  That’s it!

When people lose weight too quickly they also lose precious muscle and water.  The amount of muscle someone has is directly related to how many calories they burn at rest, so losing this muscle will reduce a person’s metabolism to a crawl.  As a result, once the dieting ends these individuals gain weight back exponentially.   This is the biggest reason for Yo-Yo dieting.  Don’t let this be you!

Set ambitious but also realistic goals for yourself. Lose 1-2 lbs of body fat per week.  That’s it!

Spot Reduction Is a Myth

I am asked about spot reduction so often that it makes my head spin! Spot reduction deals with the idea that doing exercises that focus on a specific area of the body will reduce fat in that specific area.  This is not true at all.

So for example, doing 500 crunches a day will not give you a six pack or reduce the fat in your midsection. Likewise, doing tons of squats will not make your legs leaner. Get the point?

The only way to look leaner is to reduce your body fat.  The best way to do this is by working your entire body and eating a healthy diet.  For more on weight loss, fat storage and spot reduction check out this video.

Mind Set

Don't think you can know you can!

Have a positive, enthusiastic attitude every time you begin a workout. Always give it 100%. The mind is a powerful resource and you will only achieve as much as you believe you will achieve!  As Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.”
